Brian Schwartz: Are there one or two things you can attribute your success to?

Paul Anderson: At the start of my days as an entrepreneur, I entered my work into a contest. Although I didn’t win any awards, the production aspects of my submission impressed the group that sponsored the event. A few months later one of the attendees called the sponsoring group and asked if they knew anyone who did top notch slide shows. They suggested my company, and from that referral, I got my first big client who provided plenty of work over the years. I actually attribute my success to two major setbacks I experienced. Although I didn’t know it at the time, they turned out to be blessings in disguise. My number one client, my sugar daddy, terminated our contract due to budget cuts and my number one go to vendor/partner was no longer able to do work for me. These two events while difficult to deal with at the time, forced me to diversify my business and pursue new projects/clients and expand my network of partners who all brought more creativity and ideas which really helped my business thrive.
